Coach Ben Davies was vindicated in his pre-match prediction of a ‘good team performance’ as H&B ran in four tries to come from behind, in a much improved performance.
Positional changes in key positions had real impact despite H&B embracing their customary slow start, to go 5-0 down. They worked their way into the game and responded with No8 Toby Fielder scoring a brace of tries, one in the loose from a hack and chase by outside centre Rupert Sheppard and the other from a scrum deep in Lewes territory; Fielder fending off defenders as if chased by the devil himself.
Line speed was exemplary and compensated for H&B being second best at the ruck for much of this game. Kudos to centres Sheppard and William Richardson for putting real pressure onto Lewes biggest outlet and turning it into their Achilles heel. It was fundamental to the outcome.
It was also a game of curious refereeing decisions which stifled the joy of the game and led to an excess of scrums/restarts, all unnecessary at this age grade. The boys maintained focus and communication, and the front row of Alex Usher, Azat Kesen and Teddy Selfe led from the front, showing aggression, technique and commitment. Each scrum embraced as a work of performance art in itself!
Second half saw a brand new second row, with birthday boy Hayden Gladstone and Taylor Beaney getting a run out and showing real endeavour to keep up the pressure on their opponents. Much of the second half was conducted in the Lewes midfield and eventually, good field position gained from carries by among others, Kesen and blindside flanker, Louis Turpin to shift the play left, with Sheppard leaving the Lewes defence fixed for a third try. The win was completed with Lewes again deep in their own half and trying to play out; open side flanker, Monty Wheeler showing anticipation and acceleration to intercept a a pass and run in for H&B’s fourth. Fly-half William Roberts converted 3 of the 4 conversions.
