U14s Dig Deep for Impressive Win against Bognor

Michael Esdaile-Stringer

Bognor U14s 19–26 Hastings & Bexhill U14s

Hastings & Bexhill U14s produced a powerful and disciplined performance on Sunday to secure an impressive 26–19 victory at home against Bognor. The foundations for the win were laid up front, where the H&B pack delivered a dominant display. The boys produced what coaches described as some “Springbok-esque” scrummaging, repeatedly working as a unit to put their opponents under pressure at the set piece.

That cohesion carried into the loose, with the forwards combining particularly well at the breakdown. Strong ruck work helped H&B secure possession and provided the platform needed to keep their attacking game moving. Bognor posed plenty of threats of their own, particularly when their backline found space, but some outstanding H&B defence prevented several promising attacks from becoming points.

One of the standout defensive performances came from Zizzy on the right wing.
With Bognor threatening to break into open field on several occasions, the H&B No.14 produced a series of devastating tackles to shut down the attacks. Two or three of those interventions came with Bognor appearing to have a clear route towards the try line, making Zizzy's defensive contribution crucial in a game ultimately decided by just seven points.

At fly-half, Tadhg also played an important role in keeping the scoreboard moving.
The H&B No.10 produced an excellent afternoon from the tee, landing four conversions from five attempts and ensuring the team's tries were rewarded with maximum points.
With the forwards providing a strong platform, committed defence out wide and accurate kicking from the tee, Hastings & Bexhill were able to see out the contest and return home with a deserved 26–19 victory.

The individual honours reflected two of the strongest areas of H&B's performance.
Loose-head prop Jaycob was named Forwards Player of the Match after an excellent contribution to the pack's performance, while Zizzy earned Backs Player of the Match following his outstanding defensive display on the wing. A strong team performance and another excellent result for the Blue & White.

Special mention goes to Jayden Brazil too for having to switch from centre to right wing at the start of the game due to player injury, only to suffer a broken finger himself just 15mins in, during an excellent play in which he gained 20-plus meters for the team is a great example of attack through the wide channels. Get well soon Jayden.

Final score: Bognor 19–26 Hastings & Bexhill
Forwards Player of the Match: Jaycob (No.1)
Backs Player of the Match: Zizzy (No.14)
Conversions: Tadhg (4)
