An interview with Chris Robshaw

Chris Robshaw started playing rugby for Warlingham RFC at the age of seven, and attended Cumnor House School. He then moved to Millfield Preparatory School and on to Millfield public school, where he was first team captain. Robshaw played for England Schools Under 18s during 2004, before making his First XV debut during the 2005–2006 season; scoring two tries in the 42–3 victory over the Pertemps Bees.

Chris made his Premiership debut in the London double header at the start of the 2007–2008 season. He went on to be included in the England Saxons squad who won the Churchill Cup in the summer of 2008. From the 2014–15 season Robshaw was the first team and club vice captain of the London-based Harlequins club; he relinquished the captaincy to Joe Marler in order to focus on his duties as England captain.

Robshaw is a two-time Aviva Premiership Player of the Year winner, an award he first won following the 2008/9 season, and then again following Harlequins' title-winning campaign in 2011/12. He started and scored a try for Harlequins in their 2011–12 Premiership final victory over Leicester Tigers. In June 2020, it was confirmed Robshaw would remain at Harlequins throughout the remainder of the elongated 2019–20 season.

Chris won his debut cap in a Test match defeat by Argentina. In January 2012, Robshaw was announced as England captain for the first two games of the 2012 Six Nations, despite previously obtaining only a single cap. He went on to captain England throughout the rest of the tournament, featuring a clean sweep of away wins at Scotland, Italy and France, as well as a win at Twickenham against Ireland.

He was also part of the England Under 21 squad that competed in the 2006 Six Nations Championship and the 2006 Under 21 Rugby World Championship. He joined San Diego Legion in Major League Rugby for the 2021 and 2022 seasons and announced his retirement on in October 2022.

Q. What’s was your favourite game you have played in and why?
Fraser, Under 9s
A. Against France in 2016 when we finally won the Grandslam. It had taken us 5 attempts to do it and we finally got there.

Q. How did it feel the first time you stepped out as captain of the England team?
Isobel, Under 8s
A. It was incredible, and definitely my proudest moment as a rugby player. Although I must admit I was pretty nervous that first time.

Q. Do you ever wish that you could have played in another position?
Luke, Under 10s
A. If I had been quicker I’m sure I would’ve love to. But for me the back row is great as you get to do most things in the game and generally around the action.

Q. Did your teammates ever get angry or annoyed when you made a mistake> How did you react?
Elsa, Under 10s
A. Sometimes we get made at each other, but not for mistakes, we all make them, but as long as it’s not for a lack of effort. Sometimes if people aren’t working as hard as we need them we might.

Q. What is the best advice you can give us as we are about to start contact rugby next year?
Dylan, Under 8s
A. Really focus on the technique and don’t be afraid to get stuck in.

Q. What was it like to be Captain of England for the 2015 World Cup?
Enzo, Under 8s
A. Incredible to lead the team out for that opening ceremony.

Q. What was the most memorable try you scored during your professional career and why?
Jack, Under 10s
A. I didn’t score many. But when Quins won their first prem title I scored an important try in that game and that was huge for me.

Q. What new players in rugby would you like to have the chance to play with or against if you made a comeback?
Jasper, Under 8s
A. I don’t think I could keep up anymore. Young players I think henry pollock looks a special and exciting player coming into the game.

Q. Did you have any specific pre-match rituals that you always had to complete before a game to get yourself ready?
Penelope, Under 8s assistant coach
A. I liked to have a bath the night before a game, it helped me and my body relax and sleep well.

Q. Where did you have more fun playing, for Harlequins or playing for England? Also, what made you try out playing in America for San Diego?
Mike, Under 8s
A. England was always the pinnacle for me as much as I love Quins. Re SD I wanted to go and try something new and have a life experience.

We would love to extend a HUGE thanks to Chris for taking the time out of his busy schedule to complete the 'Minis Ask' questions for us!
