Colts Show Fight in High-Scoring Battle at Lewes

Michael Esdaile-Stringer

Lewes Colts 67–26 Hastings & Bexhill Colts

Hastings & Bexhill Colts showed plenty of attacking ambition and determination on the road as they battled through a high-scoring encounter with a strong Lewes side.

In a match that produced 93 points, Lewes ultimately ran out 67–26 winners, but H&B continued to compete and look for opportunities to attack despite the hosts establishing a commanding advantage. Lewes demonstrated their quality with ball in hand, combining quick phases with direct running to repeatedly put the Hastings & Bexhill defence under pressure.

The Blue & White were forced to defend for sustained periods, but when possession came their way they showed they were capable of causing problems of their own.
Sid, Harvey and Ginge were among the try scorers as H&B continued to take their opportunities and kept the scoreboard moving. Rather than shutting up shop as Lewes built their lead, the Colts continued to play. Strong carries and energetic support produced several promising passages of attacking rugby and ensured the hosts were made to work defensively throughout the contest.

It made for an entertaining, open game, with both teams willing to move the ball and attack whenever opportunities presented themselves. Lewes ultimately proved the more clinical side. Their ability to turn pressure and field position into points allowed them to pull clear and establish a lead H&B were unable to overturn. But scoring 26 points away from home against strong opposition provided positives for Hastings & Bexhill to take from a difficult afternoon.
Most importantly, the Colts continued to compete through to the final whistle. There will be lessons to take from the defensive side of the performance, but the attacking intent and willingness to keep playing despite the scoreline gives the squad something to build on.

Full-time: Lewes Colts 67–26 Hastings & Bexhill Colts
