Sunday 16th January 2022 @ 12pm
Hastings & Bexhill U13’s got their 2022 off to a flyer with a six try defeat of Chichester. Playing conditions were perfect and H&B were on the front foot throughout the game, thoroughly deserving their bonus point win. There were good team performances throughout the whole squad.
The first half was a stop-start affair with H&B applying good pressure to the visitors, led by Captain William Roberts, and Chichester spent long periods in their own half. The pack were more than a match for a big Chichester team and the backs made good inroads. The half backs – Jonah Cowell and Finley Davies – controlled proceedings throughout. Cowell’s kicking from hand was a delight.
After a near miss by centre Roberts, H&B got their first try from another successful shunt in the scrum, with full-back, Monty Wheeler joining the line to devastating effect, cutting back under the posts.
Chichester responded well and ill-discipline from H&B, allowed them to get good field position. H&B fronted up well to the penalty on their own five metre line but having won the ball, promptly lost it, allowing Chichester’s big forwards to get over the try line.
Hastings responded to the set-back and got ahead again just before half-time. A strong run down the right hand channel by second row, Zane Wickens, scattered Chichester’s defence. From the ruck, centre Rupert Sheppard executed the space, scoring in the opposite corner.
It was unreported what coaches, Ben Davies and Roger Roberts said to their team at half time but it is fair to say that H&B thereafter, played probably their best half of rugby to date. There were four unanswered tries, the pick being the first of those. Having yet again won ball from good line speed pressure, No 8, Louis Turpin broke in midfield and a sumptuous flat pass to Sheppard, allowed him time to set up winger, Ben Coulsen to score in the corner.
A couple of near misses aside, H&B were clinical with their use of space and the handling was excellent. Full-back Wheeler went over for a bonus point fourth try and these were followed by two more from Sheppard and Coulsen.
An honourable mention to forwards Azat Kesen, Harley Willans and Toby Fielder for strong efforts in the tackle and loose. Man of the Match was awarded to Ben Coulson.
H&B U13’s have a league match on 30th January, away at Eastbourne at 10:30.
