Bailey's last minute fireworks seal a dramatic win

H&B's Under 14s, kicked off their league season with a dramatic last play away win.

On a bright Sunday lunchtime, the hosts and the H&B squad treated their league of supporters to a feast of running rugby. From the first whistle the away team flew out of the traps, playing some great flowing rugby, interlinking forwards and backs. They were soon rewarded as Jack Kemsley powered over for the first of their five tries.

The home team rallied, putting H&B under pressure on their line. The H&B lads resisted the attacks and broke out with skipper, Boris Saull-Hunt running out from under his own posts. He appeared to be away and was only caught deep in the Worthing half.

Again, Worthing attacked, but a great turn over on his own line from Ben Phelps, released the H&B backs who raced up the pitch releasing winger Bailey Le-Beau, who galloped under the posts. Within minutes, the H&B team again attacked from deep, in a flowing move that released speedster, Dan Hampton, who stretched his legs to score under the sticks.

At this point complacency crept in and the home team rallied. The line speed in defence and tackling that had been so good, suddenly evaporated and the visitors. allowed the home team to score three tries before half time. Only the trusty boot of Luke Burdekin was the difference between the teams, as H&B led 21-17 at the break.

In the second half, the home team appeared in the ascendancy, but only last minute tackles kept the hosts at bay. In a tightly contested game, a flowing move, fed Le-Beau who turned on the afterburners, and circumnavigated the home defence to again score under the posts.

Again the visitors switched off and seemed to want to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. They conceded a soft try out wide, having missed a number of tackles. With two minutes to go, they again switched off and the hosts scored close to the posts. Despite the whole team attempting the charge down, the Worthing kicker, held his nerve and slotted the conversion for a 29-28 lead.

Hastings and Bexhill showed some great character after the kick off to win the ball back and on the last play of the game Worthing infringed at the breakdown, however, H&B were still on their own 10 metre line. A tapped penalty found its way to Le-Beau, who identified the gap and burst through on the half way line. From that point there was only going to be one outcome and Bailey touched down close to the posts to seal a dramatic win.

It was a well deserved victory in what was a great game played in the right spirit by both teams, who should be proud of the entertainment they provided for the sizeable crowd.
