1st XV Return to Winning Ways in Riotous Fashion

Sheppey RFC, have in the past presented great challenge to H&B; so to overcome them by such a huge margin is a great achievement. Hastings scored thirteen tries, with nine conversions from the increasingly reliable boot of fly half Bruce Steadman.

H&B started the game at a great pace and were soon dominating the visitors in every department. Scrum half Eliot Parry opened the scoring with a try under the posts following great work from second row Jimmy Adams. From this point on the game was really and truly one way traffic. Within the first twelve and a half minutes H&B had scored the fourth bonus point try; with some excellent work from Tim Sills and Tom Waring. Both Sills and Waring scored first half hat tricks with prop Tom Vincent adding to the tally.

Sheppey are a tough opposition, their game is based on physical and aggressive rugby, they scored a hotly disputed try near to the posts but went into the half time interval 54-7 down.

Adams and Parry both received yellow cards for separate acts of retaliation to the provocation from the visitors forwards. So for twenty minutes of the second half H&B were playing with only fourteen players. Despite this; the game continued in much the same vein as the first. Sills scored another hat trick; the third being the result of a flying sprint of over seventy metres to score under the posts. Six tries in one game is a feat of speed, strength and skill which is rarely seen at any level of rugby. Calvin Crosby-Clarke and Ben Petty added to the score sheet with well taken tries.

Coach Chris Brooks used his squad well and rotated his players throughout the game. Skipper Joe Umpleby suffered another set back to his first season in charge with a nasty cut on the side of his head.

The whole team played well, the forwards domination of the game allowed the backs to run their moves. Passes went to hand and tries came at regular intervals. There were outstanding performances from Nick Van Herpen, John Hannagarth and full back Harry Walker. Special mention must be made of the fantastic contribution to this emphatic victory made by Jimmy Adams. He won the ball in lineouts, rucks, mauls and loose play; his work is an inspiration to the whole club.

The 1st XV have a well deserved rest next week and return to league action away to Old Dunstonians on 11th November.
